Don't you LOVE the smell of freshly sharpened pencils, the feel of a brand new crayon in your hand, the beauty of a binder filled with notebook paper and the excitement a brand new school year brings? Well, we do and we are thrilled to start the year with you!
We hope that you all had a wonderful summer break and that you did fantastic and amazing things on your break, and hopefully got in a little reading too. We have been working this summer to come up with engaging and educational things for us to do this year and we can't wait to get started!
This year, the fifth grade has departmentalized and students will get the opportunity to experience block scheduling for the first time. The entire team, your children included are new to this so bear with us as we work out the kinks and get use to doing things a new and exciting way. Students have received their schedule and they are mastering the art of switching classes quickly and quietly. We are all so impressed in the way that they have embraced this opportunity - kids are so flexible!
In addition, as a school we have implemented PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports). This is an opportunity for students to be rewarded for their positive behavior throughout the school day. Students will earn "Shark Bites" whenever they are observed demonstrating one of our Shark Standards - Ready to Learn, Kind or Safe. Please ask your students about the work we have been doing in order to create a common understanding and language school-wide about what this means.
Each month we will post the big ideas that will be covered in each content area. If you wish to get a more in-depth understanding of what will be taught please refer to the curriculum section of the website or you can always contact your child's teacher.
