Welcome back! We hope that everyone had a wonderful Winter Break and that you are rested and recharged. This is a good time to reestablish routines with your child and to reinforce good study and work habits as they tend to become loose during the hectic holiday season. As a reminder, students receive math homework every night (Monday - Thursday) and they have reading homework every night.
It's hard to believe, but we have begun the articulation process for our fifth grader's transition to middle school. There will be an informational meeting at Farquhar Middle School on Thursday, January 10th. A flyer regarding the meeting will be coming home with your child. This is a very exciting time for our students, but is also fraught with anxiety for both you and our children. Please feel free to reach out to any of us or the middle school with any questions that may arrise between now and the end of the year.
We are reaching the midpoint of the school year, the end of the second quarter is Friday, January 25, which is also an early release day. Please check with your child regarding supplies and please replenish as needed. At this time we can honestly say that most students are in need of pencils and erasers.
Below are the topics that we will be working on for the month of January.
Math 5: Create equivalent fractions in order to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, multiply whole numbers by fractions in order to solve word problems.
Compacted Math 5/6: Dividing Fractions using the traditional algorithm
Reading: Information Text: Identifying multiple main ideas and details
Science: Using the engineering process to build model CubeSats
Social Studies: Ratifying the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, Due Process and Rule of Law
Writing: Use research from the Civil Rights Movement and the Women’s Rights Movement to form an opinion about the most important and influential person, event or idea in creating change in our government.
